Breastfeeding Pump, Clothes, and Supplies

by DrMom

Breastfeeding is a beautiful and natural thing for both mother and child. The benefits and advantages of breastfeeding include nutrition, comfort, security, as well as establishing a close relationship with your baby during feeding times. When I first started breastfeeding, I constantly worried about reduced milk supply and not having enough to feed my baby. It is natural to be concerned your first time, but with the right preparation, supplies, and willingness to stick with it, you will be better equipped for the wonderful challenge of learning how to breastfeed.

Medela
Medela Advanced Breast Pump

You will become very familiar with your breast pump. This is an item you definitely want to spend the money to get a quality product. The Medela is listed as professional grade and it has done wonders for me for both my first and second child. The backpack style is wonderful for packing the pump around. A good place to purchase and find more information when you are in the market for a breast pump is www.BreastPumpsPlus.com

If you will be traveling of away from an wall outlet for extended periods of time, it is worth buying the 9 volt lighter adapter. The Medela pump has a battery pack, but if you are on the road, you will still need this for getting power directly from your car's lighter.

The cooler system that comes with the Medela is only OK. I recommend getting a better setup like this Munchkin Cool Wrap Bottle Bag. It comes with gel packs and cools up to 13 hours. Once you pump your precious milk, you do not want it to go to waste from improper storage.

Lansinoh
Lansinoh Breastmilk Storage Bags

The Medela storage system comes with some bags, but you will need more throughout your breastfeeding months. The Lansinoh are cheaper than the Medela and are of good quality. There are always a few leaky bags no matter which brand you choose, but the Lansinoh are pretty reliable.

Lansinoh Disposable Nursing Pads

Nursing pads protect clothing by absorbing excess milk from leaking. The Lansinoh are soft, stay in place, and are very absorbent. They also don't show under the clothes as some of the others. If you want to go with washable pads instead of disposable, I prefer the Philips AVENT Washable Nursing Pads

Lamaze
Lamaze Cotton Nursing Bra

While the Bravado is good for your daily routine, I like the Lamaze cotton for wearing around the house, lounging, and sleeping. It is very comfortable and soft. Be careful with the sizing though, because it seems that it is a bit inconsistent. They tend to run large, so you may want to get a size smaller than you would normally buy. You can read the reviews on Amazon to get a little more information since it seems to vary with the different colors.

The
The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding

The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding is a book put out by the La Leche League, which is a group dedicated to educating and empowering breastfeeding mothers. The book has a ton of helpful information, but if you are a working mother like me, there are times where the book can make you feel guilty for having to leave your baby; which is why I also recommend the book listed below.

Nursing Mother, Working Mother

Being a breastfeeding, working mother is a challenge. This book has helpful information for working mothers; however, just like the previously mentioned book The Womanly Art of Breastfeeding, it can be extreme at times. My suggestion is to buy both books and not feel guilty about being a working mother, but at the same time do it with class and respect. Read both books, take in all the good information on breastfeeding, and throw out the nonsense.
