Best Cloth Diapers and Supplies

by DrMom

Cloth diapering has evolved throughout the years and is no longer the dirty, tedious job it once was. With new fabrics and supplies, cloth diapers are just as clean and convenient as their disposable counterparts. Not only are cloth diapers healthier for your baby and better for the environment, but they are also cheaper than disposable. The initial investment may be more, but once you have your supplies, you will save a bunch of money on not having to buy diapers for the next 2+ years. Plus, once your precious little one grows out of them, the diapers can be sold, donated, or stored for your next baby.

Prefold
Prefold Cloth Diapers

It's important to get a high quality diaper or the whole cloth diaper experience can be unpleasant. These "prefold" diapers have extra padding sewn into the middle for extra absorbancy. They appear huge at first but will shrink with washing and will need 2-4 washes to get to their full absorbency capacity. I would suggest buying 3-4 dozen of each size so you are not running out at the end of the day and can do laundry every 2-3 days

Flushable
Flushable Diaper Liners

Once you start to mix in baby foods to your baby's diet, the stool will be a little harder to deal with. These flushable diaper liners go right into the trash or in the toilet, saving you from having to manually rinse out the cloth diapers in the toilet.

Doubler
Doubler Inserts

These doubler inserts increase absorbency for long stretches, such as overnight, when the baby won't be changed as often. Just add them directly in the middle of the cloth diaper and you and your baby will be happy. I would suggest getting about 4 to start, and buy more later depending how often your baby wakes.

Cloth Diaper Fasteners

The Snappi Cloth Diaper Fasteners are a revolutionary alternative to diaper pins. Once you fold the diaper over the baby, they stretch and fasten to the cloth with little plastic teeth. The teeth are not sharp enough to go through the diaper cloth or to harm your baby, but they still hold onto the cloth making the diaper safe and secure.

The final step to completion is the diaper cover. The washable diaper cover keeps your baby's clothes dry. It uses Velcro type straps for simple, easy use. I would suggest buying 4 of each size , so you don’t have to do laundry every day.

Diaper Pail Liner

Throw the dirty diapers in a pail with this liner and use it to transport the dirty diapers to the washing machine when ready to do laundry. It has sturdy elastic to stay securely around the pail. It is machine washable itself and it uses antimicrobial fabric that resists odors and inhibits growth of bacteria. You will want to buy a couple of these so you will have one to use while the other one is being washed.

With the cloth diapers and liner, there is no need for a special diaper pail or diaper pail system. Instead just get a good trash can with a lid like the simplehuman slim. This will work with the pail liner and also save space with it's slim design.

A&D
A&D Ointment

You may have to try different products to see what works for your baby, but the A&D ointment has worked like a charm for both of ours. We use it with each diaper change for prevention of diaper rash. If it works for you, it's another product you may want to sign up for the Subscribe & Save program.

Diaper Rash Cream

We use the A&D ointment for prevention, but when the baby does get a rash, we use Destin max strength cream for treatment. The key is that it contains zinc oxide which helps heal and soothe the rash.

Diaper Changing Station

You will spend a lot of time changing diapers for the next few years, so do yourself a favor and buy a diaper changing table. We have the Graco Lauren Dressing Table and it has been one of our best purchases. It is a perfect height for both of us (5'0" and 5'11") and it has wheels for mobility. This thing has been a lifesaver!

Changing Pad

Our only complaint with the Graco changing table is that the pad that it comes with is very thin. I recommend buying a better, thicker pad like this highly rated one form LA Baby. I prefer the 30" because it leaves just enough room on the top of the table to store your wipes and ointment; however, they do offer a 32" if you prefer a longer pad. Both sizes will fit the Graco Lauren just fine.

The shelves on the changing station can become disorganized and unruly. Buy yourself some fabric baskets to keep everything neat and straight. It will save you frustration from not being able to find things in the middle of a diaper change.
