Must Have Animated Kid's Movies

by DrMom

I have a 2 year old and he loves watching movies. Like most parents, I don't want him watching too much television, so when he does sit down to watch a movie, I like it to be of good quality. Below is my list of must-have, animated movies for the little ones. These fun, wholesome movies will entertain children, adults, and the whole family.

Cars
Cars

I really cannot tell you how many times I've seen this movie. Even though I've seen it a countless number of times, it remains on the top of my list of movies I like to sit down and watch with my son. It has just the right amount of action, movement, dialog, and story that makes a great balance for both children and parents. The characters are very likable, so be prepared to by plenty of Lightning McQueen and Mater products afterwards.

Toy
Toy Story

Toy Story is an older movie, but it is a goodie. It was Pixar's first fully featured film released in 1995, but is still loved by children today. The toys, the story, and memorable characters Woody and Buzz Lightyear are just a joy to watch.

Finding
Finding Nemo

Finding Nemo is another must have in the collection. There is something about the bright colors and constant moving in the immersive underwater world that mesmerizes the little ones. Finding Nemo is another movie with a great story that is enjoyable for the adults.

Lion
Lion King

Lion King is another classic that is still very popular. The characters, voice acting, and story make it a great movie for everyone. There are a couple of scenes that you may want to be careful of if your child is really young. In the scene where Mufasa dies and Simba is pleading with his dad to get up is a little hard to explain to a 2 year old, but I usually just tell him that his dad is just sleeping.

The
The Little Mermaid

The Little Mermaid is another Disney must-have classic. This movie was released in 1989 and was really the redefinition of the modern animated movies.

Monsters,
Monsters, Inc.

Even though the beginning premise of Monsters, Inc. is monsters coming out of the closet to scare children at night, somehow Pixar pulled it off without scaring children to death. I worried at first when my child started watching hoping that he didn't develop some kind of fear of his bedroom, but he picked right up on the characters and loved the movie quicker than you can say Mike Wazowski!

Shrek
Shrek

What do you get when you mix a big green ogre played by Mike Myers and a talking donkey played by Eddie Murphy? Pure awesomeness, that's what! The animation, story, and characters in Shrek are top notch and need to be on the shelf of must have movies.

Wall-E
Wall-E

My family loves Wall-E. The young one always asks to watch Wall-E whether it's on the TV, computer, or iPhone. The story is also a warning to the dangers of a lazy society, which is a little scary in it's possibility. It's definitely a cute movie with a good story, but if you have really young ones, there are some slow moving scenes where Wall-E just drives around, so you may find their attention wondering off at times.

Madagascar
Madagascar

Madagascar is another one of those movies that is very enjoyable to watch with your child. The different animal characters and colorful scenes will keep the little one entertained while the story will keep you sane. My son always roars because he wants to be like Marty.

Cinderella
Cinderella

It's hard to believe that Cinderella was first released in 1950. It remains a true classic and even more than 60 years later, kids still love it.

Ice
Ice Age

Ice Age is a story of a wooly mammoth, a sloth, and a saber tooth tiger coming together to reunite a human baby with his father. That recipe for a story should be enough to get you interested in itself, but the characters and animation add on to make it a pure delight.

Aladdin
Aladdin

Aladdin is another classic Disney movie from 1992 that belongs in any serious children's movie collection.

The
The Polar Express

My little one wouldn't forgive me if I didn't add Polar Express to the list. Even though it is a Christmas movie, he watches it year round. There was one point when it was cold and rainy outside and he was sick that we must have sat and watched this movie 8 times in the course of 3 days. Admittedly, I am a little bored of this one, but the animation and story really grab the attention of the children. The younger ones may get a little bored in the second half of the movie where they make it to the North Pole, but they can watch the first half where the story takes place on the train, more times than you could imagine.

The
The Incredibles

The Incredibles has a special place in my heart because my husband and I watched this in the theater before we even had children. We really enjoyed the story and animation and it hasn't changed now that we get to share it with our son. There is some violence in this one with the superheroes fighting, so use discretion on whether it's appropriate for your child.

Despicable
Despicable Me

Despicable Me is one of my newer selections. I have just recently added it to our repertoire, but we really enjoy everything about this movie. The action is solid with the little minions, Steve Carell is great as Gru the main character, and the music and story will have you hooked.
