Putt
Putt and Approach Disc

The Discraft Soft Banger putt and approach disc will save you a lot of frustration when it comes time to actually throw the disc into the disc golf target basket. Putt and approach discs are softer and heavier so they drop more than fly. If you use a different disc for putting, you can barely miss the target, but it can still sail away and put your disc even farther away than it was before the shot.

Distance Driver Disc

The Innova DX Beast is a good long distance driver for beginning to mid-level players. You can get more distance with a driver, but beware that these will be very frustrating at first. Drivers tend to be less forgiving than other discs and can really emphasize any flaws in your throwing technique and form. When you start to get advanced, you can always work your way up to the distance record holding Innova Valkyrie.

These type discs are for trickier shots where you need to hook or fade the disc around trees or other obstacles. The Lightning Slice is an understable, right curving disc.
